Lido helps downsizing couple find the perfect fit for their lilfestyle.

Bill has worked all over the world and across Canada; they’ve raised their growing family in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. 

Laura, a teacher, changed careers at the age of 40, and began studying law with three growing kids at home.

From breaking new ground as an infill pioneer to putting up iconic condo skyscrapers, the Battistellas don’t deviate from what’s made their family-run company thrive.

“Imagine” is a big word at Battistella Developments. After all it was the imagination of Giovanni and Jacqueline Battistella that charted the course for this multi-residential developer whose uniquely timeless designs have led not only to a shift to contemporary architecture in Calgary’s inner-city, but in changing the way we looked at urban living itself.

The word “lido” has many meanings. In Italian, it can be taken to mean the beach or a way to describe the good life. It is also the title of a Boz Scaggs hit in the 1970s. In Calgary, the name brings back memories of a well-known eatery, but more recently, LIDO is the name of the latest hit from Battistella.

There are rules to this condo shopping game, don’t you know.

Shop the market. Crunch the numbers. Whittle down the list of potential housing candidates by location, price, floor plans, and amenities. Make lists of positives and negatives. Visit the shortened list for a second look. Take another look at the numbers, et al. Maybe even spend a sleepless night or two doing the “should I or shouldn’t I” thing.

That’s the way it’s supposed to go. Right?

So-Mo-Lo is the newest Silicon Valley buzzword; it describes the latest high-tech devices or apps that feature social-mobile-local capabilities. This phrase also very aptly depicts the new Battistella multi-family development of LIDO, here’s why.

Don and Sharon Mulligan, 59 and 53, respectively, have already downsized once, leaving behind a bigger house in the suburbs for a 1,600-square-foot duplex in Hillhurst in 1998.

They’re now set to minimize again. With two grown daughters readying to leave the family home, the couple decided they didn’t need quite so much space. So they purchased a large southwest corner unit in Lido in December.

WHAT THEY BOUGHT:

A two-bedroom apartmentstyle condo with a den, with more than 1,300 square feet and two decks in Lido, the latest project by Battistella Development that will be completed by late 2016. This eight-storey midrise development will be located in the heart of Kensington, on the corner of 10 Street and 2nd Avenue N.W. (the project’s namesake is the Lido Café, a neighbourhood mainstay since 1962).

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS PROJECT?...

A sense of light and airy expansiveness within the context of contemporary design was just what Nicole and Simon Battistella had in mind for their first home together. The relative newlyweds (they have been married for just over two years), had been living in Simon’s penthouse condo in the Beltline’s Chocolate building (a project designed and built by Battistella Developments, Simon’s family business).

The view and location were fantastic, but Nicole wanted to create a home together, a place where they could think about starting a family; a home that was big enough for entertaining and enjoying life.

Lido, which will be on the corner of 10th Street and 2nd Avenue N.W., will be next to its current project, Pixel, in Kensington. In partnership with the Dobbin Group, the ground floor of this mixed-use project will feature boutique-style retail stores and cafes, with executive-style hotel suites on the second floor, says Traci Wilson, Battistella’s sales and marketing manager.
